Check out this link to a video of the Pope Squat Tour.
November 1st 2006 marks four years since the City of Toronto and Province of Ontario ordered the Toronto Police to evict dozens of residents out of 1510 King Street West. Since that time the building has sat empty and as we saw first hand today- has not been touched. After gathering for a meal at the Parkdale Activity and Recreation Centre a small group of OCAP members and Parkdale residents went to 1510 King St for a look inside the building.

Pope Squat Demands

OCAP is putting forward the following demands:
1. USE IT OR LOSE IT BYLAW
Across the downtown core, including here in Parkdale, there are numerous abandoned buildings. Some of these are owned by the City itself while others are owned by private landlords waiting for property values to rise before they begin construction. In a city with so much poverty and homelessness and with rents skyrocketing we find this unacceptable. Earlier this year the City expropriated the building at 1495 Queen Street West in order to convert it into supportive housing. A Use it or Lose it bylaw would put this type of positive step into law making it easier for the City to turn abandoned eyesores into housing. A good place to start would be the Pope Squat.
Empty Buildings in David Miller's 'Hood Squatted

VIDEOS!
Following the November 9 march on the Pope Squat (1510 King St. W.) hundreds of people boarded chartered buses to the ritzy neighborhood where Toronto Mayor David Miller hangs his hat.
Just northeast of High Park is a group of large houses which have been slated for demolition to make way for (you guessed it!) more condos. In an area of one entire city block there is only a single house which still has people living in it. Fifteen neighboring buildings are sitting empty! The cops made every effort to stall us, forcing us to crawl along well below the speed limit by driving their cars slowly just in front of the buses.

HELP US CHALLENGE DAVID MILLER AND THE CONDO DEVELOPERS
When Mayor David Miller took office last year, he did so with promises of change. People hoped the homeless crisis would be addressed, the police would be reigned in, and communities would be strengthened. One of the commitments made by Miller on the campaign trail was to turn surplus city properties into housing for the homeless. He also made significant gestures towards building further social and supportive housing in this city. So far, he has failed to honour his commitments, and the city government continues to abdicate its responsibility to deal with homelessness and housing. The City has already sold off what was once an extensive list of municipal properties and where has the profit gone? Not into building affordable housing, to say the least.
